Breast Augmentation and Asymmetry Correction with Breast Implants

Our physicians serving the Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse area perform breast enlargement with breast implants, medically known as augmentation mammoplasty, for a number of reasons:

  • Breast enlargement can enhance breast size for women who feel their breast size is too small.
  • After a pregnancy, breast size and firmness can decrease. Breast augmentation with implants can correct this.
  • If one breast is smaller than the other, breast implants and/or breast reduction can correct the difference.
  • Breast augmentation can be used to reconstruct a breast following surgery such as a mastectomy.

At our office in Rochester, the breast implants we use during the breast augmentation procedure are silicone shells filled with a salt-water solution known as saline. Our breast enhancement patients in Rochester, Buffalo, and Syracuse occasionally request breast augmentation using breast implants filled with silicone, but they are not approved by the FDA for public use.

Breast Augmentation Surgery

Our Rochester breast enlargement surgeons take a variety of factors into account when planning a breast augmentation procedure. We will make every effort to keep the resulting scars as inconspicuous as possible, taking into account your personal anatomy to determine the least visible location for breast implants. Most incisions for breast augmentation are made in the inframammary fold.

The breast augmentation surgeon will work through the incision to lift your breast tissue and skin, creating a space beneath your pectoral (chest) muscle. By placing an implant under each breast, our breast enhancement surgeons can enhance your bust contour by one or more cup sizes. If your breasts are sagging, your doctor may recommend a breast lift in addition to breast augmentation surgery.

At our facilities serving Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester, breast augmentation surgery with breast implants usually takes one and a half hours. When the operation is complete, the incisions are closed with absorbable stitches placed below the skin. If you are in the area around Syracuse, Buffalo, and Rochester, and are considering breast enhancement using breast implants, contact The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester today.

Breast Lift

Time can take its toll on the firmness and elasticity of a woman's breasts. Factors ranging from pregnancy and nursing to the force of gravity can make breasts lose their shape and firmness, causing them to sag. Performed at our surgical facilities in Rochester, breast lift, medically known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that can be used to raise and re-contour breasts that have begun to sag. Our board certified plastic surgeons can also use the breast lift procedure to reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin that surrounds the nipple. If your breasts are smaller or have lost volume due to pregnancy or other factors, our Rochester physicians can insert breast implants in conjunction with breast lift surgery to increase your breasts' firmness and size.

Breast Lift Surgery

At The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, breast lift techniques vary, but in our most common mastopexy procedure, we make an anchor-shaped or vertical limited incision that follows your breast's natural contour, outlining the area of skin that will be removed and defining the location where the nipple will be repositioned. We then remove the excess skin during the breast lift procedure, and move the nipple and areola to the higher position. Finally, we bring the skin surrounding the areola down and together to reshape the breast, and close the incisions with stitches.

Breast Reduction

Exceptionally large breasts can cause a variety of problems, both medical and personal. The weight of overly large breasts can cause back, shoulder and neck pain, skin irritation, and even skeletal deformities. Bra straps may leave deep impressions in a woman's shoulders. Unusually large breasts may also cause a woman or teenage girl to feel uneasy and self-conscious.

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, can help women who are troubled by large breasts. Breast reduction surgery removes glandular tissue, skin, and fat from breasts. It can make them smaller, lighter, and firmer. The goal of breast reduction is to bring a woman's breasts into better proportion with the rest of her body.

Breast Reduction Surgery

When we perform breast reduction, we use an anchor-shaped or vertical limited incision that circles the areola. The physician then removes fat, skin, and excess glandular tissue. After moving the nipple to its new position, the plastic surgeon shapes the new contour of the breast by bringing the remaining skin down and around the areola. The doctor may also use liposuction to remove any excess fat that remains under the armpit area.

Male Breast Reduction

Male breast over-development affects between 40 and 60 percent of all men. Technically known as "gynecomastia," which is Greek for "woman-like breasts," this condition may affect only one breast or both. Certain drugs have been linked with gynecomastia, as have certain medical problems, but in the vast majority of cases, there is no discernable cause.

If you feel self-conscious about male breast over-development, our cosmetic surgeons can help. With male breast reduction surgery, we can remove the fat, glandular tissue and, in extreme cases, excess skin that cause gynecomastia, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.

Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Sometimes, an excessive amount of glandular tissue causes male breast over-development. This glandular tissue can be cut out, or "excised," with a scalpel. This excision may be all that is necessary to correct the problem, or it may be used in conjunction with liposuction. When a surgeon excises glandular tissue, he or she makes an incision in an inconspicuous location, typically either around the areola or underneath the arm. The surgeon works through the incision to remove excess glandular tissue, as well as any fat and skin that need to be removed. If your gynecomastia consists primarily of excessive fatty tissue, your surgeon will likely use liposuction alone to remove the excess fat.

In extreme cases where your surgeon has removed large amounts of fat or glandular tissue, your skin may not conform well to your new smaller chest contour. In these cases, excess skin may have to be removed to allow the remaining skin to fit snugly to your new chest contour.
