Facelift

The effects of daily stresses such as age, sun exposure, and changes in weight transform the appearance of our patients as they grow older. As creases and folds begin to form on the face, many patients seek cosmetic treatments that can make them look as young as they feel. At The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, facelift surgery, technically called rhytidectomy, can help you "set back the clock."

In a facelift procedure, your plastic surgeon removes any excess fat from your facial area, tightens the muscles, and re-drapes the skin over your face and neck. When patients undergo the facelift procedure at our surgical facilities in Rochester it results in a much younger-looking appearance. A facelift can be performed in combination with other cosmetic treatments such as eyelid surgery, brow lift, or rhinoplasty.

Facelift Surgery

Your surgeon will usually begin the facelift procedure with incisions just above the hairline. These incisions extend down and in front of your ear, around, and back behind the earlobe. If your neck is also in need of tightening or contouring, your facelift surgeon will perform the appropriate procedure at the same time.

After separating the skin from underlying muscle and fat, the facelift surgeon may trim or otherwise sculpt the fat deposits around your neck and chin to achieve the optimal facial contour. Facial muscles and membranes are then tightened, and the skin is redraped over your face. Your surgeon then trims off the excess skin, and closes the incisions with stitches.

Within a few weeks of your operation at our Rochester surgical center, your facelift will leave your face much smoother and younger-looking.

Rhinoplasty

At The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, rhinoplasty surgery is used to alter the size and shape of a patient's nose. Our surgeons in Rochester can perform rhinoplasty to reduce or increase the size of your nose, to alter the shape of the bridge or the tip, reduce the width of your nostrils, or correct the way your nose is positioned. Rhinoplasty can also be used correct a birth defect or injury to the nose, and to help relieve nose-related problems with breathing.

Rhinoplasty Surgery

At our facilities in Rochester, rhinoplasty surgery usually takes an hour or two, though more complicated operations may take more time. First, the skin is separated from the cartilage and bone that make up the structure of the nose. Your physician at the Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester may perform rhinoplasty from inside the nose, with the incisions located inside the nostrils. Your plastic surgeon may, on the other hand, prefer to perform rhinoplasty as an "open" procedure. "Open" rhinoplasty is often used in more complicated cases.

After making the incisions, your rhinoplasty surgeon sculpts the underlying structure of your nose into the desired shape. The type of sculpting performed will depend on the decisions you and your surgeon have made concerning what your new nose should look like. At the end of the rhinoplasty procedure, your plastic surgeon pulls the skin back down over the newly-sculpted nose structure, and seals all incisions with stitches. Dressings and splints will usually be off by the end of the first week after the rhinoplasty surgery.

Brow Lift

Brow lift surgery is used to lift the sagging eyebrows that appear as you age, and which give you a tired, sad, or angry look. This surgical procedure gives a more youthful look to the area above your eyes.

Brow lift surgery raises the eyebrows to their normal, youthful appearance. This will also lift some of the excess skin on the upper lid that causes a tired look. At The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester, we use minimally invasive techniques to perform an endoscopic brow lift.

Brow Lift Surgery

Endoscopic Brow Lift Surgery only requires four small incisions, less than an inch long each. Your surgeon will insert a pencil-shaped instrument called an endoscope into one of the openings. At the end of the endoscope is a small camera connected to a television monitor. This allows your surgeon to see the underlying muscles and tissues without having to make large incisions. Working through another of the incisions, your surgeon uses a different instrument to lift the forehead skin and alter or remove muscles and tissue in much the same manner as a traditional brow lift, resulting in the same smooth, youthful appearance.

Ear Surgery

For children and teenagers, prominent ears can be a source of self-consciousness and even teasing. Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can help reduce the size of large ears and set ears back closer to the head. By age eight, a child's ears are almost fully grown, so ear surgery is usually performed on children between the ages of eight and 14. Ear surgery may also be performed on adults without any added risks.

The Otoplasty Procedure

An otoplasty operation usually takes between one to two hours to perform, though it may take longer if the procedure is exceptionally complicated. The method used to perform the ear surgery will depend on the specifics of the problem.

One of most common methods of ear surgery involves making a small incision in the back of the ear, exposing the cartilage. Your surgeon then shapes the cartilage, removing small amounts and bending the ears back toward the patient's head. If necessary, the cartilage may be held in place with non-removable stitches. It may also be necessary to remove a larger amount of cartilage to keep the fold as natural-looking as possible.

In a different though related technique, the surgeon makes an incision in the back of the ear and removes skin, using stitches to hold together folded cartilage. In this method, it is not necessary to remove any cartilage from the ear.

Ear surgery leaves a scar behind the ear. Scars are generally minor and inconspicuous, and fade with time.

Blepharoplasty

As you age, your eyelids, both upper and lower, tend to sag, creating bags beneath your eyes and drooping upper lids. The physicians at The Plastic Surgery Group of Rochester perform eyelid surgery, known medically as blepharoplasty, to remove excess fat and skin from your eyelids. Drooping lids and puffy bags beneath your eyes can make your face look older and more tired, and may possibly even cause problems with vision. Eyelid surgery has no effect on facial wrinkles such as crow's feet, dark circles beneath your eyes, or drooping sagging eyebrows. If you would like to treat these problems as well, our surgeons can perform your eyelid surgery in conjunction with operations such as a facelift or brow lift or nonsurgical treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and collagen.

Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery can take anywhere from one to two hours to perform, depending on how extensive your procedures is. If your surgeon is performing the procedure on all four of your eyelids, the surgeon will probably work first on the upper eyelids, then on the lower ones.

In the most common eyelid surgery procedure, your surgeon places the incisions inside the creases of your upper lids, and in your lower eyelids just below the lashes. The surgeon then works through the incisions, separating the skin from the muscle and fatty tissue beneath it. Excess fat is removed, and slack muscles and sagging skin are tightened. Finally, small sutures are used to close all the incisions.
